Worked on ch 15 some today. A snippet, although perhaps not a very good one.

Not dinner," River said, as Brother Matthew drew her out of the brewery and into the abbey's sunlit courtyard.

"No," Brother Matthew agreed. The bells sounded frantic; the brothers were running across the courtyard with unseemly haste, their robes hiked up over their knees, heading straight across the tended grass, heedless of the paths they normally followed with such deliberate care.

River tried to think, tried to feel what the emergency was, but the bells drowned everything out. Brother Matthew hitched up his own robes in his free hand, and dragged her toward the dining hall, where all of the other brethren appeared to be headed. River was pulled along, unresisting; her attention was outflung, grasping at a hint of insight that jittered away from her on each new vibration of the clanging bells.

She looked up for it, and saw the sky, bright and glorious blue. She looked out for it, and saw the fountain, its water flashing brilliant blue. She looked down for it, and saw her hands, the veins pulsing an unnaturally luminescent blue.

River screamed, and crumpled onto the grass.

It's a blank in the MS right now. Musical training seems to have been part of a Companion's education, but I can't recall if Inara is ever said or shown to play any specific instrument. I know Nandi talks about some instrument, but I forget which one, and can't look it up right now.

Anybody know the answer to either question?

From today's work:

"There's a place we could go to refit," Wash said, "Orbital repair facility, should have everything we'd need, no Feds, no docking fees."

"That's a crazy fantasy," Jayne said. "Mal, the low pressure is affecting his brain."

"Unlike you," Wash said dryly.

Before the two men could get to sparring, Mal said, "Where?" He drew a deep breath; it seemed to him already that his head was clearing some.

"Cap'n, no," Kaylee warned. Her eyes brimmed with tears. What in the 'verse could Wash be suggesting that sounded so ideal, and made Kaylee cry? He looked at Wash.

"Miranda," the pilot said.

Mal's whole body went cold.

I think that I am more than halfway through the WIP (The Four Winds). I am plotting the denouement right now. I needed to figure out what order the scenes went in.

Was sick this morning, so sent Spouse and Children off to church without me.

Stayed home instead and watched "Safe," which had never been a favorite ep of mine, but I enjoyed it much more than before, this time.

Finished a difficult conversation in the current chapter and started the next chapter. Still feel rusty on the speech cadences of the various characters. What I really need is some NEW Firefly. But then, who doesn't?

I'm working my way through The Four Winds, from the beginning, to get back into it after the hiatus. And it finally hit me how to fix the problem that stopped me cold at chapter 12. The solution is fairly simple. How come I didn't see it earlier?

Maybe I can get some forward motion soon.

I last posted here in early July. Then we took a family trip, and when we came back I got socked in with deadlines.

Tomorrow's the last major seasonal deadline.

Tonight I started pulling the chapters of The Four Winds that are written together into a single document, and I hope to work out the wrinkle in the last couple that hung me up right before I hit the Deadline Marathon and start this thing going again. Because y'know what? What I really want to write is the sequel to The Four Winds, but in order to do that I need to write The Four Winds all the way to its bitter end first.

Just incase anyone was wondering . . .

Hello and welcome to everyone who has posted or messaged me recently. It's encouraging to know that people are still interested! I didn't believe that I could ever be busier than I was when I wrote Wish I Was Somebody Else, but wow . . . I have been socked in for months.

So . . . if I don't post a new chapter in a month, you take the ship, and you come get me!

For those who still pay attention, the draft of chapter 11. Any and all comments welcome, just so I know somebody still cares.

Oh, and: The STory So Far. Job went bad, with the result that Serenity and her Very Hot Cargo are fleeing the rendezvous point, heavily damaged and with only Mal, Jayne, Wash and Kaylee aboard. Simon and Zoe, caught away from the ship, have also had to flee, separately. Inara is trapped with her client at the rendezvous point. River had left the ship, and vanished into the rendezvous point, which is basically a pirate island in space.

I have not been around much, or writing much, this past year. I had wondered why, myself. I love writing fic; what happened?

My dayjob is "freelance writer." At the present time I write three columns a month for one monthly newsletter, and two other newsletters besides. I also have a couple of other projects ongoing that crop up periodically, but on a day to day basis, I have those three deadlines every single month.

Just this month, I voluntarily gave up one of the three columns. I still have to write it for this month and next, but after that I'm down to two.

Just this month, one of the two newsletters I write was taken in-house, which means I won't be writing it anymore. I still have to write one more issue, but after that, I'm done.

Which means that two months from now, I'll be back where I was a year ago, before I took on the third column and the second newsletter.

And I must be a total idiot, because it only just now hit me that that's where my fic writing time all disappeared to. Duh.

So, Watch This Space. I plan to be back!
